Experimental Retinal Detachment


Abstract
Experimental retinal detachment was produced iii rabbit eyes with various met-hods and the result was analysed.
Group I (10 eyes); Removal of 0.3cc vitreous, injection of 0.3cc (50 international units) hyaluronidase into the vitreous, and mechanical formation of retinal tear with 26 gauge needle.
Group jl (12 eyes); Removal of 0.3cc vitreous, injection of 0.3cc air or 0.3cc (50 international units) hyaluronidase into the subretinal space, and mechanical formation of retinal tear by a trans-scleral 26 gauge needle.
Group III ( 6 eyes); Removal of 0.3cc vitreous, injection of 0.3cc (50 international
units) hyaluronidase into the vitreous, mechanical formation
of retinal tear with intravitreaI 26 gauge needle, and subre-
tinal injection of 0. 3cc hyaluronidase one week later.
Retinal detachments were cbtained in 5, 7, and 4 eyes of cach group I, II, and III, but over half of detached retinas were reattached spontaneously within two weeks.
The longest duration of detachment was 8 weeks in a case of group III. The problem and difficulty of obtaining experimental retinal detachment in rabbit eyes were discussed.
